A look back at 2018, what a year!

As the year draws to a close, it’s a good time to look back at the challenges, changes and accomplishments of 2018. Everyone knows that, in business and industry, standing still is tantamount to walking backwards. Happily, our year at Gully Howard Technical has seen plenty of positive adaptation and exciting new ventures. Here’s a look at some of the ones we are proudest of:

Further establishing ourselves as an already trusted and recommended provider of asbestos training, GHT has launched a new training website including online payment. Having become a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) in the past year, as well as becoming part of the IATP working group, we want to make access to our courses as simple as possible.

Innovation & Collaboration

As to the courses themselves, we have bolstered and diversified our offering with a new eLearning platform. This has made asbestos awareness training even more readily accessible to more workers, especially those worried about sparing the time for asbestos training. The training can be accessed on any mobile device, overcoming the challenges of time and money off site. Among these eLearning courses is a new roofing specific course which we designed in collaboration with the NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors). This represents the beginning of a new endeavour, in which we intend to produce more defined-scope and industry-specific courses, rolling them out in various languages appropriate for a diverse workforce.

Fit2Fit Face fit training

As the only company to be Fit2Fit accredited for both qualitative and quantitative face fit testing and training, we’ve been delighted to see our number of delivered face to face courses increase by 55%.

Raising awareness of asbestos

The past year has seen Gully Howard Technical has taken to the roads in a big way, and that’s not just our vans carrying out over 15,000 surveys and an increase in face to face asbestos awareness & non-licensed training of 155%! We’ve been out and about raising awareness about the risks of asbestos and the training available. Our local asbestos awareness campaign gained coverage from Portsmouth News and Town & City Magazine. As well as exhibiting at the annual BOHS conference and the Hampshire Health & Safety Group conference, our own Training Manager, Kirsty Phillips spoke alongside IOSH VP Louise Hoskings at Contractors Day about the need to know where to look for asbestos on site and what to do if it’s suspected. Our senior Technical Manager, Phil Sloan, appeared in a video interview at the launch of the IOSH “No Time To Lose” (#NTTL) campaign event.

“Having co-hosted the asbestos presentation with IOSH Vice-President Louise Hosking, it is evident what a fantastic and timely opportunity this was,” said Kirsty Phillips, Training and Marketing Manager at Gully

“Speaking to a room full of roofing industry professionals, it emerged that only a very small number of them were confidently able to identify where asbestos-containing materials might be found on an image of a school building. This is a clear indication that there is still a significant knowledge gap that needs to be bridged to enable construction workers to do their jobs safely. Howard Technical.

Industry expertise

It’s been a busy year too for our MD, Jonathan Grant. A respected figure in the asbestos industry, 2018 has seen him elected to the BOHS council, become an advisory to the Faculty of Asbestos Assessment and Management (FAAM) and collaborate with a number of industry professionals to establish the National Organisation of Asbestos Consultants (NORAC).

Awards finalist

As a company that deeply values the work and innovation that happens at every level in the organisation, we are especially happy to be finalists for the award of Employer of the Year in the Portsmouth Business Excellence Awards. The winner won’t be announced until February, but whatever the outcome, we remain committed to our ethos of‘client focused, employee centred’, investing in staff, believing that doing so is the key to ensuring 2019 is every bit as successful as this year has been.
